When employing a group training apprentice/trainee it is important to understand that both the MTA-GTS and the host employer share a duty of care.

In accordance its requirements under Section 19 of the OHS&W Act 1986 the MTA-GTS will ensure the apprentice/trainee has completed an offsite workplace induction prior to placement with a host employer. The MTA-GTS will also ensure the apprentice/trainee has received instruction and training regarding common industry hazards in the workplace and is aware of their obligations under Section 21 of the OHS&W Act 1986.

The host employer under Section 19 of the OHS&W Act 1986 as a minimum is required to so far as reasonably practicable is to provide and maintain –

  • A safe working environment
  • Safe systems of work
  • Plant and substances in a safe condition
  • Must provide adequate facilities for the welfare of MTA-GTS apprentice/trainees at any workplace under the control and management of the host employer
  • Must provide such information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure MTA-GTS apprentice/trainees are safe from injury and risks to health.

Prior to the apprentice/trainee commencing with the host employer the MTA-GTS will conduct a workplace inspection and assist the host employer to rectify any safety concerns.

The MTA-GTS will provide the host employer with workplace induction and task risk assessment documentation which is to be completed on the first day of the apprentice/trainee placement.

MTA-GTS apprentice/trainees are supplied with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) prior to placement. The PPE supplied in accordance with Australian Standards 2210, 1716, 1337, 1338, 1270, 2161, 4501.2 include safety boots, safety glasses, safety goggles, combination overalls, gloves, ear muffs, welding helmet/goggles (body making and panel beating), respirator (panel beating and vehicle painting), air wash hood (vehicle painting). The MTA-GTS may supply additional PPE depending on the host employers working environment or requirements (eg. sun hat, sunscreen).
Apprentice/trainees are instructed in the use and maintenance of all PPE supplied.

Notification of work related injuries
The MTA-GTS office must be advised immediately of any apprentice/trainee injury in the workplace regardless of whether any time has been lost.

If the apprentice/trainee is admitted to hospital as a result of a workplace injury Safework SA must be notified immediately.

All injuries must be reported by contacting the MTA-GTS office on (08) 8241 0522.

Workcover Claims

The MTA-GTS remains the legal employer of the apprentice/trainee throughout the contract of training, therefore all copies of Workcover Medical Certificates and associated accounts are to be forwarded to the MTA-GTS office (This is the responsibility of the apprentice/trainee).
